The Play's The Thing: Volume One

The Play's The Thing: The Plays of William Shakespeare is aimed at a YA (young adult) audience as an introduction to the greatest plays ever written. Direct and personal and decidedly non-academic, each play gets its own essay, giving the reader an overview of the play with an emphasis on the relevance that the play has to the reader's own life and concerns. As I wrote in the introduction, 'The goal of this guide, then, is to turn Shakespeare from somebody you have to read into somebody that you want to read.' A young man struggles with his father s unexpected death. A young couple pledges their love to each other despite their families angry disapproval. A young man rebels against his father while at the same time craving his approval. A father and his family roam across what appears to be a post-apocalyptic dystopian landscape. A Roman general kills the sons of his enemy and serves them to her baked in a pie. Two young couples escape into a forest where magic rules and nothing is quite what it seems. A group of young men decide to give up on women and dating in order to devote themselves to their studies, until a group of beautiful young women changes their minds. The latest YA novels? While they certainly sound like they can be, they re not. They re just one way of looking at some of the plays of William Shakespeare (to be precise, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Henry IV Parts I & 2, King Lear, Love s Labour s Lost) that shows that they re not just old-school classic plays they re old-school classic plays that tell stories that are relevant to my life, to your lives, and to the way we all live today. These are stories of love. Of families. Of fathers and sons. Of the rise and fall of kings. Of what it s like to grow old. Of what it s like to love someone so much it hurts. Of treachery and revenge. Of ambition. Of jealousy. Of forgiveness. Of murder. Almost every human experience you can think of is brought to life in these plays. Which is why, for more than 400 years, they have been seen as the central glory of Western literature. And that s also why the plays of William Shakespeare are, on a daily basis, performed on stages around the world. The stories he told, the characters he created, are universal. Audiences in China, in Ghana, in India, in Brazil, in every part of the world, can appreciate and love Shakespeare as much as the British and Americans.

Spinoza's political thought has been subject to a significant revival of interest in recent years. As a response to difficult times, students and scholars have returned to this founding figure of modern philosophy as a means to help reinterpret and rethink the political present. Spinoza's Authority Volume I: Resistance and Power in Ethics makes a significant contribution to this ongoing reception and utilization of Spinoza's political thought by focusing on his posthumously published Ethics. By taking the concept of authority as an original framework, this books asks: How is authority related to ethics, ontology, and epistemology? What are the social, historical and representational processes that produce authority and resistance? And what are the conditions of effective resistance? Spinoza's Authority features a roster of internationally established theorists of Spinoza's work, and covers key elements of Spinoza's political philosophy, including: questions of authority, the resistance to authority, sovereign power, democratic control, and the role of Spinoza's 'multitudes'.

How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James The Portrait of a Lady is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880-81 and then as a book in 1881. It is one of James's most popular long novels, and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who in 'affronting her destiny', finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. Like many of James's novels, it is set in Europe, mostly England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of James's early period, this novel reflects James's continuing interest in the differences between the New World and the Old, often to the detriment of the former. It also treats in a profound way the themes of personal freedom, responsibility, and betrayal.

A catastrophic collision with a mystery vessel leaves the Caliban crippled and drifting, systems failing, crew desperate. VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, BRIEF EDITION, masterfully uses the theme of movement−the journeys of peoples, ideas, and goods−to help students make sense of the huge range of people, places, and events throughout history. Each chapter is framed around the story of a person who traveled within the time period and region under discussion. Students can practice being critical readers by evaluating the traveler's observations and attitudes. A primary source feature, “Movement of Ideas,” helps students develop the core skill of analyzing sources by allowing them to compare multiple explanations of significant ideas. This brief text meets the needs of instructors who want a lively narrative style without sacrificing the themes and pedagogy that make world history understandable to students; it is also ideal for instructors who want to supplement a text with many primary sources. Available in the following options: VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, BRIEF EDITION, 2nd Edition (Chapters 1−32); Volume I: To 1600 (Chapters 1−16); Volume II: Since 1500 (Chapters 15−32). The Caliban-Prospero encounter in Shakespeare's The Tempest has evolved as a metaphor for the colonial experience. This book utilizes the Caliban symbol in examining the influence of colonialism in Caribbean literature, focusing on three major writers: Jean Rhys of Dominica, George Lamming of Barbados, and Sam Selvon of Trinidad. The novels chosen are set in England where the writers and their characters experience the alienation of the exiled--unwelcome in Prospero's home country. Other Caribbean writers are included in the analysis, and the volume concludes by examining contemporary writers for whom Caliban's role appears to be shifting beyond physical exile.

Cockburn's biography of Lord Francis Jeffrey is the only publication about this infamous literary critic. Jeffrey was a founder of The Edinburgh Review and editor from 1803-1829. Cockburn provides us with a personal account of his friend and colleague that includes extracts from letters Jeffrey wrote that offer a fascinating insight into Scottish law, politics, literature and his deep affection for Scotland. First published in 1852, this book tells how Lord Jeffrey came to be the most influential critic of his time and a man who turned the world of literary criticism upside-down. He famously criticised Wordsworth and Coleridge and one review even lead to him meeting for a duel with Thomas Moore. He was not always a harsh critic however; he enjoyed Keats and Byron and towards the end of his life he became a great admirer and close friend of Charles Dickens. As a Scottish reformist he openly supported the Whigs through the pages of The Edinburgh Review. He was well educated and had a successful career in law, which eventually led to his appointment as Lord Advocate of Scotland. Everyone interested in Scottish history, politics. Law, literary reviews and life during the early 19th Century will find this book intriguing. About the Author Henry Thomas Cockburn (1779-1854), Solicitor General for Scotland, was educated at Edinburgh University. As member of the Speculative Society he mixed with fellow eminent Scotsmen, Sir Walter Scott, Lord Brougham and Lord Francis Jeffrey. In 1834 he took his seat as a judge in the Court of Session and the title of Lord Cockburn. Volume II (ISBN 1-904995-01-2) is also available. It contains over two hundred letters that Jeffrey sent to prominent politicians, authors, lawyers as well as close friends.
